The following standards apply to all K9s:

K9 Standards:

Each Police Service Dog has been to International Police K9 standards (PSP). X-rays of hips, elbows, and spine are conducted to assure suitable health and the soundness of joints. A complete medical examination has been performed, also checking; gait, skin, coat, teeth, heart and found clear of intestinal parasites. Appropriate immunizations are always up to date.

Our Police Service Dogs have been specifically selected for their genetic aptitude for work, including its social stability and attitude, extremely high level of hunting instinct drives, confident environmental behavior, and evaluated extensively for the following:

• Must be alert, active, outgoing, curious and confident.
• Must display basic socialization and tolerance to people.
• Must be confident in nighttime situations as well as inside and outside of buildings.
• Must be confident on different types of floor surfaces, heights, and stairs, etc.
• Must be confident under gunfire and display no noise sensitivity.
• Patrol K9's and Dual Purpose K9's undergo a Defense Test, which assesses the K9’s drive, confidence, and physical ability to defend itself and/or handler when faced with a threat.

We do not endorse or recommend any one particular standard, as we believe there are positive areas of assessment in each Nationally Recognized Certification Organization: Each region of the United States provides varying levels of localized access and opportunity for K9 Unit's ongoing training and certification.
